1. WHAT'S IN THIS RELEASE
Logitech Wingman Software (LWS) supports all Logitech digital
gaming devices under Windows 95 and Windows 98. It allows full programmability
of Logitech digital gaming devices in Windows 95 and Windows 98. Logitech analog
gaming devices are not supported with this software.2. INSTALLING AND REMOVING LWS UNDER WINDOWS 95 AND WINDOWS 98
2.1 QUICK INSTALLATION
Although the LWS installation procedure will give you the option to either
reboot or to return to Windows, we do require restarting Windows to complete
the installation, and recommend saving any work and closing any open programs
before beginning the installation. It is not necessary to uninstall previous versions of Logitech Entertainment
Software prior to installation. The installer will check for previous versions
and remove or update files as necessary. To Begin the installation place the Logitech Wingman Software CD
in your CD-ROM drive. The Setup window appears in a few seconds (if AutoPlay is
enabled on your system), then follow the directions that appear on the setup
screens. If the AutoPlay feature of Windows 95/98 is not enabled, then simply go to the
Start menu, choose "Run", click "Browse" to select the CD-ROM drive,
double-click the "SETUP.EXE" program on the LWS CD, then follow the
directions that appear on the setup screens.2.2 UNINSTALL
LWS can be removed from Windows 95/98 by clicking the Add/Remove Programs
icon in the Windows 95/98 Control Panel. Select Logitech WingMan Software and
click the "Remove" button. Then follow the on screen instructions for
completing the uninstall.2.3 UNINSTALL NOTES
The uninstall program is designed to remove the main LWS application
files but it will leave Logitech joystick drivers and registry entries
installed. This is a Windows requirement - all installed minidrivers become part
of the operating system and may not be removed by the product's uninstall
process. The following are some notes to keep in mind:1. Installed driver files are only active when the device they support is
selected in the Game Controllers control panel. Otherwise, they do not
use any RAM.2. Logitech gaming devices will not be removed from the Game Controllers
control panel after uninstall. Therefore, it is possible to activate the
Logitech joystick driver in the Game Controllers control panel after
uninstall.3. If you prefer a "driver-only" type of install, you may install
the WingMan Profiler software, then uninstall it to use the drivers by
themselves. Bear in mind that some games will not support all the button
functions available on your device, and that these buttons will therefore be
non-functional and non-remappable for those games.2.3.1 DRIVER FILES
The LWS driver files for Logitech gaming devices will remain on your
hard drive after uninstall. Future versions of LWS will update these drivers.THESE FILES WILL REMAIN:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
IFORCE2.DLL
LJOY.VXD
LJOYV.VXD

Logitech Wingman Software is designed to work with the
Windows 95/98 operating systems only. Windows 3.x and true DOS (6.22 or lower)
are not supported. LWS does support DOS games that run in a Windows 95/98
DOS box.4. GAME-SPECIFIC NOTES
Most games that support force feedback have this option disabled by default. The
reason for this is that currently the majority of joysticks on the market do not
support force feedback. Having force feedback enabled with a non-force feedback
controller connected is unnecessary and could possibly cause errors or
conflicts. Below are the steps to take if the force feedback is not working in
the following games. For games not listed in this readme file, refer to the
documentation that came with the game.GENERAL GAME INSTALLATION:
The following procedure should guide you through installation of the games
included with your Logitech gaming controller. First, insert the CD for the game
into your CD-ROM drive. The installer should automatically launch. Follow the
on-screen instructions to complete the installation of the game. If the
installer does not automatically launch, do the following. Click the "Start"
button, then click "Run". At the command line type X:\SETUP.EXE ("X" being the
drive letter for your CD-ROM drive), then click "OK", and follow the on-screen
instructions.NOTE: See section "4.6 DID-F22 AIR DOMINANCE FIGHTER" of this readme file for
special instructions on installing this game.4.1 DESCENT FREESPACE
ENABLING FORCE FEEDBACK IN DESCENT FREESPACE:
Launch Descent Freespace by clicking on the "Start" button, then selecting
"Programs", then "Games". then "Descent Freespace", then click "Descent
Freespace". From the "Launcher" click "Setup". From the "Setup" window click
the "Joystick" tab. Check the "Enable Force Feedback" and "Enable Directional
Hit (Force Feedback)" boxes and click "OK" to save the settings. For further information or support on Descent FreeSpace go to their website at

the main screen click "Setup". From the Setup screen click on the "Stick Force
Tab". Check the box marked "Use Force Feedback" and click "Apply" to save the
settings. Individual force settings for Warbirds may also be adjusted from this
screen (i.e. Canon Recoil, Damage Buffeting,...).ADDITIONAL NOTES: Warbirds sees buttons 7, 8, and 9 as Hat 2 North, Hat 2 South,
and Hat 2 West. This does not affect their functionality in the game. For further information or support on iMagic Warbirds go to their website at
http://www.imagiconline.com4.3 REDLINE RACER
ENABLING FORCE FEEDBACK IN REDLINE RACER:

clicking on "Redline Racer for Windows 95". At the Main screen click
"Configure". From the Configure screen click "Controls". From the Controls
menu set "Force Feedback" to "ON".ADDITIONAL NOTES: Redline Racer REQUIRES a Direct3D compatible (or 3DFX) video
accelerator. Redline Racer will NOT work without 3D acceleration. Also, Redline
Racer does not support buttons higher than 4 or the throttle natively. You will
need to use the WingMan Profiler to make buttons 5-9 and the hat (POV) work in
Redline Racer. For further information or support on Redline Racer go to their website at
http://www.ubisoft.co.uk4.4 INCOMPATIBLE FORCE FEEDBACK TITLES
Unfortunately, there are some games which support force feedback using protocols
which are not compatible with Logitech force feedback devices. Most new titles
that support force feedback use the protocol supported by Logitech devices. The
following is a list of games in which it is known that force feedback does not
function properly with Logitech force feedback joysticks. Logitech devices use
what is known as "I-Force 2.0" technology in conjunction with Microsoft's DirectX
5.2+ software to perform force feedback. These games are generally either
I-Force 1.0 or are using Microsoft's own proprietary "Visual Force Factory" for
force feedback effects.ABC's Monday Night Football 98

website at http://www.psygnosis.com4.8 QUAKE 2
ERROR WHEN LAUNCHING QUAKE 2 FROM LOGITECH WINGMAN PROFILER:
The out-of-box install of Quake 2 will not run unless the command line used to
start the game contains the location of the Quake 2 CD-ROM. Upgrading Quake 2
to version 3.15 or higher resolves this issue.4.9 X-WING VS TIE FIGHTER
The Logitech WingMan Profiler looks for the executable name of all open programs
to determine whether to apply a known profile to the game. Due to the manner in
which X-WING VS TIE FIGHTER is launched, the Profiler is not able to find the
correct executable name. Unfortunately, at this point in time there is no
available profile for X-WING VS TIE FIGHTER. This does not affect the
functionality of Logitech devices within the game, as all buttons, axes, and
hat switches (with the exception of hats 2 and 3 on the WingMan Interceptor) are
fully programmable within the game itself.4.10 UbiSoft F1 Racing
For the forces to feel correct with the Formula Force, you will need to go into
the UbiSoft directory under c:\Windows (c:\windows\ubisoft) and modify the
ubi.ini file found there. At the bottom of the file, there is an entry
which reads "[F1RS]". In this section, change:FFDevTypePlayer0=JOY
to
FFDevTypePlayer0=WHEELThis will allow for the correct wheel forces to be played, instead of the default
joystick ones.4.11 Gremlin's Motorhead
If you have autoplay disabled on your computers CD-ROM drive, to launch Motorhead
please enter into the "mhead" directory on the root of your cd rom (x:\mhead where
"x" is your CDROM drive letter) and run the "start.exe" file. If you have autoplay
enabled, when you insert the CDROM it will automatically run this file.5.0 DEVICE SPECIFIC NOTES
This section describes specific issues encountered when installing LWS
with certain Logitech game controllers.5.1 WINGMAN WARRIOR
LWS uninstalls previous versions of LES, including the program
LAUNCHER.EXE. LAUNCHER.EXE enables the spinner in several DOS games. It
activates the appropriate support for the game when that game's executable
name is placed on the LAUNCHER.EXE command line. That is, LAUNCHER.EXE
DOOM will launch Doom with Warrior spinner support. Here is a list of
supported executable names, along with the name of the game in parentheses:Blood (Blood
Dark (Dark Forces)
Doom (Doom, Ultimate Doom)
Doom2 (Doom 2, Final Doom)
Duke3d (Duke Nukem 3D)
D2 (Descent 2)
Heretic (Heretic)
Hexen (Hexen)
Quake (Quake)
Rampage (Redneck Rampage)
SW (Shadow Warrior)If you play any of these games using the WingMan Warrior's spinner knob, it
recommended that you continue to use LES 2.3 and do not install LWS.6. TROUBLESHOOTING
This section describes solutions to specific problems you may have.
Also, you may refer to the Troubleshooting section of the LWS Online Help.6.1 3RD-PARTY INSTALLATION PROGRAMS
It is suggested that the Windows uninstaller be used rather than 3rd party
uninstall programs. If during LWS installation, there are any
conflicts with an installation monitoring program, quit the installation, then
turn off the installation monitoring program and re-install LWS.6.2 CONNECTING LOGITECH DIGITAL GAMING DEVICES
If your Logitech gaming device has more than one connector on the end of the
cable it is important use only one connector at a time. Connecting both can
cause erratic behavior. Also, some network interface cards have a 15-pin
connector that looks the same as a 15-pin game port. If your computer has a
network card installed please verify that your Logitech gaming device is
connected to the game port. (Some Logitech digital gaming devices connect
via the serial port or USB port. These devices may not have a 15-pin
connector at all)6.3 COMPUTERS WITHOUT GAMEPORTS - or - CANNOT ADD WINGMAN FORMULA FORCE OR
WINGMAN FORCE TO GAME CONTROLLERS WHEN DEVICE IS CONNECTED TO SERIAL PORTThe Logitech WingMan line of serial and USB gaming devices will function on
computers without gameports or soundcards. However, the Windows operating
system requires a gameport entry in the "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers"
section of the Device Manager in order for any gaming devices to be added in
the Control Panel. If your computer does not have a soundcard or a gameport, it
is very important that a "virtual" gameport is listed in the Device Manager in
order for the WingMan Force or WingMan Formula Force to function properly. It is
not necessary for a physical gameport to be installed in the system. Installing
the driver is sufficient.Logitech includes a utility on the WingMan Software CD-ROM which will test for
the presence of a gameport and allow the user to add one if there is not one
present. To run the utility, please do the following:1. Click "Start" and choose "Run"
2. Type in "X:\support\chkgport.exe" where X: is the letter of the CD-ROM drive
3. Click OKThe utility will search for a gameport on the system, and will prompt the user
to install a virtual gameport if it does not find one. To install the gameport
drivers, please do the following:1. When the dialog stating that there is no gameport installed on the machine
appears, click OK.
2. Scroll down through the list of manufacturers and choose "Microsoft."
3. In the list of devices, choose "Gameport Joystick."
4. Click Next.
5. Windows will tell you that it can install your new hardware on a specific
address. Click Next.
6. Windows will tell you it has finished installing your new hardware. Click
Finish.
7. Windows will tell you that you need to shut down your computer and install
your new hardware. Click OK.
8. The computer will shut down. Restart your computer, and the Logitech serial
gaming device should function properly. Some systems, however, are shipping with custom versions of Windows 98 which do
not contain the files necessary to install the "Virtual Gameport." For those
Win98 users, there is a different solution - the user may add a "HID-compliant
gaming controller" in the same manner as they would add a "Gameport Joystick"
The only difference is that, instead of scrolling down to "Microsoft" and
choosing "Gameport Joystick" the user instead clicks on "(Standard Game Device)"
and selects a "HID-compliant gaming controller" After clicking next, all the
requisite files will be copied and the user will be able to add joysticks in
Game Controllers. This should not be an incredibly common issue, but it may crop up from time to time.
As an alternative to running the CHKGPORT.EXE utility, you may follow the steps
below to manually add a virtual gameport to the system:For Windows 98 systems:
1. Click "Start," "Settings," "Control Panel"
2. Doubleclick "Add New Hardware"
3. Click "Next"
4. Windows will tell you it is going to search for plug and play devices. Click
"Next"
5. If Windows detects any devices, click "No, the device is not in this list"
and then click "Next"
6. Select "No, I want to select the hardware from a list" and click "Next"
7. Scroll down the list, highlight "Sound, video, and game controllers and
click "Next"
8. Scroll down the list on the left and choose "Microsoft" from the list of
manufacturers
9. Scroll down the list on the right and choose "Gameport Joystick" from the
list of models
10. Click "Next"
11. Windows may ask for the installation CD. It will then tell you to reboot
your computer. After rebooting, the joystick should function properly. For Windows 95 systems:
1. Click "Start," "Settings," "Control Panel"
2. Doubleclick "Add New Hardware"
3. Click "Next"
4. Select "No, I want to select the hardware from a list" and click "Next"
5. Scroll down the list, highlight "Sound, video, and game controllers and
click "Next"
6. Scroll down the list on the left and choose "Microsoft" from the list of
manufacturers
7. Scroll down the list on the right and choose "Gameport Joystick" from the
list of models
8. Click "Next"
9. Windows may ask for the installation CD. It will then tell you to reboot
your computer. After rebooting, the joystick should function properly.
You should now be able to add the device in the Game Controllers Control Panel.6.4 LOGITECH INTERNET UPDATE
If you are not able to use the Logitech Internet Update, please make sure that
"Dial-up Networking" is installed on your computer. You can verify this by
opening "My Computer" and looking for the icon called "Dial-Up Networking." If
this icon does not exist, you will not be able to use Internet Update.6.5 COMPUTERS WITH AOL/MSN/COMPUSERVE/PRODIGY
Due to the proprietary nature of these online service providers, you may
experience difficulty using the Logitech Internet Update feature. These
providers do not place a standard Windows connection icon onto your system;
they use their own. There are two ways to "work around" this.1) Bring up your connection manually. If you can connect to ANY web site,
then your connection is up. If you receive error messages, then most
likely your connect is not up. By saying "bring up" we mean "have your
modem dial into your provider (MSN/COMPUSERVE/AOL/PRODIGY)." If you
choose this route, please select "Use an existing internet connection" in
the Logitech Internet Updater.2) Create the standard Windows connection icon(s) yourself. This works for
all of the providers except AOL. To do this, please follow the steps below:a) Click on your "Start" button.
b) Choose "Programs | Windows Explorer"
c) Scroll the left-hand window to the bottom.
d) Select "Dial-Up Networking."
e) Click on the "Create New Connection" icon. This step may be
unneeded, as Windows 98 will launch the Create New Connection wizard
upon clicking the "Dial-Up Networking" icon.
f) Follow the directions in the Wizard to create your custom icon.
g) Make sure when entering your login/username and password that you
use the correct capitalization. Many systems require this, and the
login name of "Joe" is different than "joe", for instance. The login
name and password were supplied to you by your provider when you
purchased service. (You may have chosen them yourself; it's simply
your existing login/password.)The new icon will connect you to your existing Internet provider; it is
not a new service. When you do the "Internet Update" section, you will
be able to choose from these custom icons, and will use the "Connect to
the Internet via modem" option. It will dial, allow you to choose what
you would like to upgrade, and then disconnect you (hang up the modem.)6.6 WIDE DIALOG BOXES
On some installations of Windows 95, you may encounter dialog boxes which
extend far past the edge of the screen. If this occurs on your system, please
do the following to correct the issue:1. Click "Start," and choose "Run"
2. Type in "X:\support\com32upd.exe" where X: is the letter of the CD-ROM drive
3. Click OK
4. Reboot the computer. This should correct the issue.
6.7 COMPUTERS WITHOUT AN INTERNET/WEB BROWSER
If you have problems with the Logitech Internet Update, and receive a message
about "secur32.dll not found," please run the "wintdist.exe" program in the
\support directory of your Logitech Wingman Software CD. To do
this, please follow these steps:1. Click "Start," and choose "Run"
2. Type in "X:\support\wintdist.exe" where X: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive
3. Click OKThis will add files required by Internet Update that are not present on machines
that do not have a web browser.6.8 SERIAL DEVICE ALWAYS SHOWS "NOT CONNECTED"
If your serial game controller is "Not Connected" in Game Controllers, please
make sure that:1. The device is plugged in to a serial port.
2. The device has power. (Check the lights on the device)If the device is plugged in and has power, there may be a resource conflict (IRQ
or address) between one of the serial ports on the computer and another device
in the system. To check for serial port conflicts, please do the following:1. Click "Start," "Settings," "Control Panel"
2. Doubleclick "System
3. Click the "Device Manager" tab
4. Click on the "[+]" next to the "Ports (COM & LPT)" entry.
5. Single-click on the top-most COM port.
6. With the COM port highlighted, click "Properties."
7. Choose the "Resources" tab.If the "Conflicting Device List" shows ANY conflicts, the serial game device
may not work. Unfortunately, due to the wide variety of hardware available on
the market, there is no standard set of steps to correct resource conflicts.
Please refer to your system's manuals in order to resolve any conflicts that
you encounter. Resolving any conflicts should allow the serial game device
to function.6.9 GAME DOES NOT RECOGNIZE STEERING THE WHEEL
Logitech Wingman Formula and Logitech Wingman Formula Force steering wheel
controllers are identified in the Windows registry as a "Car Controller." Some
games, such as Road Rash, do not recognize "Car Controllers," looking only for
"Joysticks." If your game does not seem to see the steering wheel, this may be
the cause. This issue can be resolved by making a change in the Registry. This
change may cause functionality in other games to suffer, so please change these
keys back to their original values when you are done playing the affected game.WARNING: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly may cause symptoms requiring a
reinstallation of Windows 95. Logitech is not responsible for issues which may
result from incorrect use of the Registry Editor. Use the Registry Editor at
your own discretion. The Registry Editor should only be used to change the
keys listed in the instructions below:Note: The keys listed below include the item <devicename>, which is a
placeholder for the actual key name for the specific device involved. Please
substitute the appropriate key name (as listed below) for <devicename> when
editing the registry. For WingMan Formula, the <devicename> is "LogitechWingmanRally"
For WingMan Formula Force, the <devicename> is "LogitechWingmanRallyForceSerial"
or "LogitechWingmanRallyForceUSB" depending on which port the device is attached
to.1. Click "Start" and choose "Run." Type "regedit" and press "Enter"
2. Click the + sign next to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
3. Click the + sign next to "System"
4. Click the + sign next to "CurrentControlSet"
5. Click the + sign next to "Control"
6. Click the + sign next to "Media"
7. Click the + sign next to "MediaProperties"
8. Click the + sign next to "PrivateProperties"
9. Click the + sign next to "Joystick"
10. Click the + sign next to "OEM"
11. Click on and highlight the appropriate <devicename> key
12. In the window on the right hand side of the Registry Editor, there should
be a key called "OEMData" Highlight that key and click "Edit," "Modify"A dialog box will open up showing a set of numbers. These numbers must be
modified in order for the device to be seen as a "Joystick" rather than as a
"Car Controller."To identify the device as a "joystick", the entry should look like this...
00 00 00 00 06 00 00 00
To identify the device as a "car controller," (default) it should be this...
40 00 00 00 06 00 00 00If the current entry does not reflect the type of device the game needs to be
able to see, please modify the key accordingly. To modify the Registry so that
the steering wheel is seen as a "Joystick," doubleclick the first pair of
numbers (40) and type in 00 instead. To modify the Registry so that the steering
wheel is seen as a "Car Controller," doubleclick the first pair of numbers (00)
and type in 40 instead. If you have the Logitech Wingman Formula Force, please make sure to change both
the "LogitechWingmanRallyForceSerial" and the "LogitechWingmanRallyForceUSB"
entries. If you have the Logitech Wingman Formula, then you only need to modify the
"LogitechWingmanRally" key.Once again, it is imperative that these keys be changed back to their default
values after you are finished playing the affected game. If these keys are not
changed back to their default values, complications may arise in other games
that use the steering wheel. We know the following game to be affected by this issue:
Electronic Arts' "Road Rash"6.10 SERIAL DEVICE SHOWS "NOT CONNECTED" AFTER PLUGGING INTO A DIFFERENT PORT
Unplugging a Logitech serial device and plugging it into a different serial port
on the same machine without first removing the entry in Game Controllers can
cause the device not to be detected by Windows. To correct this issue, please
do the following:1. Click "Start" and choose "Settings," then "Control Panel"
2. Highlight the Logitech serial joystick (e.g. Logitech WingMan Force Serial)
and click "Remove"
3. You will be asked to confirm removal. Please click "Yes"
4. Click the "Add" button
5. Scroll down and highlight the appropriate device, then click "OK"The device should now function properly.
